How to use the Pace Calculator

  1. Choose what to Solve for: pace, time, or distance.
  2. Enter the other two: the distance (or tap a race), the time in hours, minutes, and seconds, or your pace per km or mile.
  3. Press Calculate. The answer appears with pace, speed, and a table of splits.

How it works

pace = time ÷ distance
time = pace × distance
distance = time ÷ pace
speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ time (hours)
pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609344

Examples

  • 10 km in 50:00 = 5:00 per km (8:03 per mile), 12 km/h.
  • A 4-hour marathon needs a pace of 5:41 per km or 9:09 per mile, about 10.55 km/h.
  • A half marathon at 5:30 per km takes 1:56:02.

Using pace to plan a race

Most runners race best with even or slightly faster second-half splits. Use the split table to write down target times at each kilometre or mile, and start a little slower than goal pace for the first few.

Limitations

  • Assumes an even pace. Hills, wind, and heat change real splits.
  • Race distances use the official lengths: a marathon is 42.195 km.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide your time by the distance. 50 minutes for 10 km is 5 minutes per km.

What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?

About 5:41 per km or 9:09 per mile.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?

Multiply by 1.609. A 5:00/km pace is about 8:03/mile.
