How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the Bill and the Tip percentage, or tap a preset.
  2. Enter the number of People and choose whether to Round up the total or each share.
  3. Press Calculate. Each person's share appears first, with the tip and the total.

How it works

tip = bill × tip %
total = bill + tip
share = total ÷ people
round the total: total = ceiling(total), share = total ÷ people
round each share: share = ceiling(share), total = share × people

Examples

  • $64.50 with an 18% tip for 3 people: tip $11.61, total $76.11, $25.37 each.
  • $100 at 20% for 4 people, rounding each share: $30.00 each.
  • $87.40 at 15%, rounding the total up: $101.00, which makes the tip $13.60 (15.56%).

Tipping customs differ

In the US, 15% to 20% is usual at sit-down restaurants. In much of Europe, service is often included and people round up. In Japan tipping is uncommon. Check the local custom when you travel.

Limitations

  • The tip is calculated on the amount you enter. Some people tip on the pre-tax bill.
  • Rounding goes to whole currency units.

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15% to 20% for table service is common, 18% to 20% for good service.

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Move the decimal one place left and double it. On $64.50, 10% is $6.45, so 20% is $12.90.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Either is accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is a little cheaper.
