How to use the SERP Preview Tool

  1. Type or paste the Title and Meta description of your page.
  2. Enter the page URL, an optional Date, and switch the Device between desktop and mobile.
  3. Read the Search result preview and the pixel and character counts, then shorten anything that gets cut.

How it works

  • Google cuts titles and descriptions by width, not by character count: "WWW" takes more room than "iii".
  • Each text is measured with canvas.measureText in Arial, the font Google uses in results: 20 px for titles and 14 px for descriptions.
  • Titles are cut at about 600 px. Descriptions are cut at about 920 px on desktop and 680 px on mobile, spread over two lines. A date, when given, uses part of that space.
  • Text is cut at the last whole word that fits, with … added.
  • The counters turn green at 60 characters or less for titles and 110-165 characters for descriptions.

Examples

  • A 50-character title in normal mixed case fits comfortably, at roughly 450 px.
  • A title in capital letters reaches 600 px after about 40 characters and gets cut.
  • A 200-character description is cut on mobile after about 150 characters, so put the key point first.

Limitations

  • Google often rewrites titles and descriptions to match the search query. The preview shows the likely display, not a guarantee.
  • Pixel limits change from time to time and differ slightly between screens.
  • If Arial isn't installed on your device (some Linux systems), widths are measured with a similar fallback font.
  • Rich results such as stars, prices, and site links aren't shown.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?

Under about 600 pixels, which is usually 50-60 characters. Put the main keyword and message at the start in case it gets cut.

How long should a meta description be?

About 120-160 characters. Mobile shows less, so the first 120 characters should carry the message.

Why does Google show a different title from mine?

Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, or don't match the page. A short, accurate title is rewritten less often.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The preview is drawn in your browser.

Often used together with the Google SERP Preview.
