Blood Sugar Converter

This blood sugar converter turns mg/dL into mmol/L and back, the two units glucose meters use around the world. It also estimates average glucose from an HbA1c result.

How to use the Blood Sugar Converter

  1. Type the Value you want to convert.
  2. Pick the unit it is in under From, and the unit you want under To. The swap button flips them.
  3. The answer updates as you type. The table below it shows the same value in every other unit, each with its own copy button.
  4. For HbA1c, pick % HbA1c or mmol/mol HbA1c under From to see the estimated average glucose.

How it works

mmol/L = mg/dL ÷ 18.0182
mg/dL = mmol/L × 18.0182
eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × HbA1c (%) − 46.7
HbA1c (%) = 0.09148 × HbA1c (mmol/mol) + 2.152

18.0182 is the molar mass of glucose (180.182 g/mol) divided by 10, because mg/dL is per 100 mL. The eAG formula comes from the ADAG study (Nathan et al., 2008).

Examples

  • 100 mg/dL = 5.55 mmol/L.
  • 7 mmol/L = 126.13 mg/dL.
  • HbA1c 7% = 154.2 mg/dL (8.56 mmol/L) estimated average glucose.
  • 53 mmol/mol = 7.0% HbA1c.

Estimated average glucose (eAG) for common HbA1c results.

Which countries use which unit

The United States, Japan, France, and several other countries report blood glucose in mg/dL. The UK, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe use mmol/L. If you read a study or a meter from another country, divide or multiply by 18 to get a rough figure, or use this converter for the exact value.

HbA1c reflects average glucose over the last two to three months. The eAG figure turns it into the same unit as a meter reading, but it is an estimate; individual results vary.

Limitations

  • For general information only. This is not medical advice; ask your doctor about your results.
  • The mmol/L factor applies to glucose only, not to cholesterol or other blood tests.
  • eAG is an estimate from a population study.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert mg/dL to mmol/L?

Divide by 18.0182. For example, 180 mg/dL ÷ 18.0182 = 9.99 mmol/L.

How do I convert mmol/L to mg/dL?

Multiply by 18.0182. For example, 5.5 mmol/L × 18.0182 = 99.1 mg/dL.

What average glucose does an HbA1c of 6.5% mean?

About 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L), using eAG = 28.7 × 6.5 − 46.7.

Can I use this factor for cholesterol?

No. Cholesterol uses a different factor (38.67), because its molar mass is different.
