How to use the QR Code Scanner

  1. Choose an image, drop it on the box, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). On a phone, you can press Scan with camera instead.
  2. Read the Decoded content. For a link, check the highlighted domain.
  3. Copy the content, or press Open link if you trust the address.

How it works

  • Browsers that have the built-in BarcodeDetector (Chrome and Edge on Android, macOS, and ChromeOS) use it. Other browsers load the jsQR decoder, about 48 KB, the first time you scan.
  • Large images are scaled down to 1,600 pixels on the long side before decoding, which is faster and just as accurate for QR codes.
  • jsQR also tries the inverted image, so light codes on dark backgrounds work.
  • The camera is only requested when you press the button, and it stops as soon as a code is found or you press Stop.
  • Links never open by themselves. They open in a new tab with noopener when you click.

  • A screenshot of a code for https://utilza.app shows the link with the domain utilza.app highlighted.
  • A Wi-Fi code shows the network name, security type, and password as separate fields.
  • A code that says https://paypa1-login.example makes it clear, before you click, that the domain isn't the one you expect.

Limitations

  • Only QR codes are read, not barcodes or Data Matrix codes.
  • Blurry, very small, or cut-off codes may not decode. Crop closer and try again.
  • Camera scanning needs HTTPS and your permission. If you denied it, allow the camera in your browser's site settings.

Usually the code is too small, blurry, or partly cut off. Crop the image around the code, or scan with the camera held closer.
