How to use the Length Converter

How it works

Every unit is defined as an exact number of meters. The value is multiplied by the size of the unit you start from and divided by the size of the unit you want:

result = value × from-unit (m) ÷ to-unit (m)
  • 1 inch = 0.0254 m exactly (the 1959 international inch)
  • 1 foot = 12 in = 0.3048 m
  • 1 yard = 3 ft = 0.9144 m
  • 1 mile = 1,760 yd = 1,609.344 m
  • 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m

Examples

Metric and imperial length

The metric system builds every length from the meter in steps of ten, so converting between mm, cm, m, and km only moves the decimal point. Imperial units grew from older measures: 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, and 1,760 yards to a mile. Since 1959 all of them are defined through the meter, which is why the factors here are exact rather than rounded.

The nautical mile is different again. It was based on one minute of latitude and is now fixed at 1,852 m. Ships and aircraft use it, together with the knot (one nautical mile per hour).

Limitations

  • Results are shown with up to 12 decimals and at least 6 significant digits. Very large or small values switch to scientific notation.
  • Length can't be negative, so a minus sign gives an error.
  • US survey feet (retired in 2022) are not included; the difference is 2 parts per million.
